Project Details

Motivation of the work:
It is to convey the message that our personal problems may seem significant to us, but in the grand scheme of the universe, they are relatively small. The aim is to encourage people to broaden their perspective and consider the larger issues that humanity faces, such as wars, diseases, and poverty. By highlighting the insignificance of certain personal problems, the animation intends to inspire
viewers to shift their focus towards more urgent global concerns.

Concept, Objective and Significance of the work:
The primary objective of this animation is to encourage empathy towards the world's major issues. It aims to challenge viewers to reevaluate their priorities and consider the impact they can have on a larger scale. By showing the contrast between personal problems and global challenges, the animation seeks to motivate individuals to take action and contribute to the betterment of society by collective action.

Choice of Presenting Medium and Deliverables:
The choice of a 2D frame by frame animation enables the use of expressive visuals, vibrant colors, and dynamic movement, such as rough sketch style for some of the scenes. The medium's ability to combine visuals with audio elements, such as music or narration, enhances the
overall impact and engagement of the animation.

"Your Problem is Not Big Enough" is a 2D animation that shows the prevalent theme of modern individualism and self-absorption. Through a visual narrative, the animation highlights the insignificance of our personal problems in the grand scheme of the universe. It serves as a stark reminder of how our self-centered focus blinds us to the vastness of the world around us and the interconnectedness of global issues.

The animation challenges viewers to reevaluate their priorities, suggesting them to set aside their personal concerns and instead focus on the broader picture. It prompts us to reflect on the importance of collective responsibility and the impact of our actions contributing to a more compassionate and caring society.

To create this animation, research was conducted on various global issues such as wars, diseases, poverty, and other pressing challenges faced by humanity. Through reading related news articles, reports from international organizations, I am able to gain understanding of the scale and impact of these issues. Through trending issues discussed on social media platforms, interviews and news, I am also able to discover issues that may seems less important compared to global challenges, such as discussion over gender pronounce and people over-focusing on their lives on social media platforms.

Exemplary works and inspiration from other artists referenced:
In order to create a smooth and cinematic transition between the collection of vignettes and situations of life and to make contrast between personal and social problems, juxtaposition is used in editing. For example, while the streamer minding her own businesses in the toilet, there are a lot happening around her. Like squeezing her pimple juxtaposing with volcanic eruption, the way she describes how the pimple “kills” her juxtaposing with people suffering in actual wars. The use of juxtaposition is inspired by the iconic scene from the film The Godfather, which different scenarios are shown at the same time and might seems unrelated but audience will still be able to find the connection between them. This animation is also inspired by Hayao Miyazaki, whose films often address environmental and societal issues while emphasizing the interconnectedness of all living beings. The animation also took inspiration from the works of Banksy, a renowned street artist known for his social and political commentary.

Media/materials to be used:
The animation will be created using a 2D frame by frame technique, which involves drawing each frame individually to create fluid motion. Traditional animation tools such as pencils, paper, and lightboxes may be used for the initial sketching and keyframe creation. Digital software, such as Procreate and Davinci Resolve, will be used for the final animation production, allowing for precise control over the visuals and integration of audio elements.
